Written by Susan Marie Swanson; illustrated by Beth KrommesThe House in the Night was inspired by the Mother Goose rhyme, "This Is The Key Of The Kingdom" and the unique black scratchboard illustrations do a great job echoing that pattern: each two page spread draws you a little further into the story, then brings you step by step back home.
Krommes won an Henry Bergh Children's Book Award for illustration for her book Butterfly Eyes and Other Secrets of the Meadow.
